Yes, we need to do better with waste heat from data centers. It’s a moving target. Per unit of compute power we use less than in the water-cooled mainframe days but there are more of us using IT services. There are stories that give hope too, such as Amazon in Seattle harvesting waste heat from its DC for use throughout the campus for heating. Nothing’s perfect but that’s a creative approach that says more than just try to use less.
